Laena isn’t the only one to meet a fiery end in this episode. First, Harwin loses his position as Commander of the City Watch, then his father insists on his removal to their family seat at Harrenhal in order to let the controversy around his relationship with Rhaenyra simmer down. The last we see of him is driving his shoulder into a wooden door in the castle, trying to break his father free from a massive fire.

Some House of the Dragon Scenes Are Quite Gory
In the early "brainstorming" stages outlining the series as a whole beyond the first season, Condal and Martin had a "mini writers room" with screenwriters Claire Kiechel, Wes Tooke, and Ti Mikkel. All three did contribute to ideas for the series as a whole, but Kiechel and Tooke departed for other projects before the writing process on specific Season 1 scripts began (thus they were not part of the "writers' room" roundtable meetings in Season 1). Rhaenys convinces her husband to side with the blacks, and Rhaenyra looks to see if she has other allies. She sends Jacaerys (Harry Collett) north to the Vale and Winterfell to check on their allies there and Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) to Storm's End to treat with Lord Borros Baratheon (Roger Evans). But at Storm's End, Lucerys runs into Aemond, who was sent there by the Crown. Aemond is still intent on getting revenge on Lucerys for cutting his eye out. After Lord Borros dismisses Luke, Aemond chases him and his dragon Arrax on his dragon, Vhagar, who is much larger than Arrax. Both boys lose control of their dragons, and Vhagar eats Luke and Arrax.
He is clearly undervalued in the court of Viserys, and his exhaustion with the state of the realm is evident. The maester tells Viserys that she's going to die, but that there's a chance to save the child. To do so, however, would mean cutting it out and inflicting tremendous amounts of pain on Aemma. Viserys, desperate for an heir, doesn't struggle long before asking them to cut out the baby.

Harrenhal is already a cursed place, completed on the very day that Aegon Targaryen arrived in Westeros and began his conquest; the dragon Balerion roasted Harren and his sons alive inside the castle. “The Princess and the Queen” is bookended with birth scenes. The space in between is filled with roasting eggs, unhatched eggs, gifted eggs, and one particularly weird Aeg — Aegon, the firstborn son of Viserys and Alicent, flaxen-haired menace, and hyper-public masturbator. The hints here aren’t subtle — House of the Dragon knows that any show about succession must necessarily deal with wombs and their avatars — but here, the show makes the most of the metamorphic motherhood of raising dragons. This is a level of critical appreciation that ought to be afforded every show, including Game of Thrones. There’s truth in the old saw of journeys mattering more than destinations, and it’s among the best ways to engage with and appreciate art of all types.
• If the shock of Game of Thrones was that it killed its lead character, Ned Stark, before the end of the first season, the shock of House of the Dragon is that its male lead keeps clinging to life no matter how sickly he grows. His body is a victim of his power, slowly rotting off in the same way he is losing control of his kingdom. Viserys can’t let go of the notion that his family will someday experience their own after-school special conversion and turn towards each other with love and acceptance, a blindness that is wreaking havoc.
He says Rhaenyra's children's parentage is a settled matter and asks his cousin Rhaenys what Corlys wants. She says that Corlys always wanted Luke to be heir, and that Luke and Jace (Harry Collett) are betrothed to Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell) and Baela (Bethany Antonia), respectively. Viserys says it's settled and orders Vaemond's tongue removed. The Targaryens play their own game of thrones in this prequel series, which begins with a flailing king, his calculating brother, and a young girl thrust into power.
The crew is a little tinder box of monarchical conflict, waiting to ignite. While I doubt the show will take us all the way to the beginning of “Game of Thrones,” this story is headed ultimately toward a king who is insane to the point that he wants to burn everyone and is killed for it. He is followed a couple of decades later by a daughter who eventually traces a similar path.
• Daemon’s course varies greatly from how it’s laid out in Fire & Blood. In the book, he returns to Driftmark with Laena about a year after his girls are born. A final indignity arrived in the form of a cup of morning-after tea, prepared by the Grand Maester. It was a bitter reminder that even when Rhaenyra isn’t being forced to “squeeze out heirs,” as she put it awkwardly to the heir-squeezer-in-chief, Alicent, her womb still belongs to the realm. So it is about the long collapse of a dynasty (pending whatever Jon Snow, née Aegon Targaryen, does in his planned sequel, though empire building doesn’t seem to suit him). And things that undo dynasties include ineffective leaders, infighting and moral corruption allowed by unchecked power.
Luke (Elliot Grihault) is in line to be his heir, but his brother, Ser Vaemond, thinks Driftmark should go to him again. He thinks he has a chance at winning, too, since the King is ill, and Alicent and Otto really control the throne. The episode also contains a scene between Alicent and a servant who was raped by Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney). She comforts her but orders her to tell no one and gives her moon tea to drink.
